Port Elizabeth - Garden Route - Cape Town

Day 1: SATURDAY: Collections

Today the tour will pass each project around Port Elizabeth to collect volunteers who will be going with this particular departure. If you haven’t seen Addo please let us know so we can make arrangements to visit the Addo National Park. The bus will also pay a short visit to Port Elizabeth and in the late afternoon it heads to Jeffreys Bay for your Overnight. At the Lodge we all get together to get to know each other and chat during a traditional South African Braai (BBQ) (included).

Collection Points are: Wildlife Sanctuary, Lion and Tiger Breeding Programme, Big 5 Elephants and Lions, Game Reserve Project and Big 5 Game Reserve Project.

Day 2: SUNDAY: Jeffreys Bay

The bustling town is bordered on both sides by nature reserves & rivers – the Kabeljous & Seekoei Estuaries are within Jeffreys Bay –the Noorsekloof nature reserve. We invite you to soak up the sunshine, enjoy the relaxed atmosphere & have a wonderful stay. Jeffreys Bay offers a variety of activities like Sandboarding, Surfing, Horse riding or bike hire. International surfers flock to catch the legendary waves in this town, a paradise of sunshine, aloes, dolphins, shells, perfect points & classic reefs . If you are not feeling active today you can visit the wonderful white sanded beaches or the famous Billabong Surf Village.

Overnight in Jeffreys Bay: This night we sit along the bon fire for a traditional Potjkie kos (Traditional South African Stew) included

(For the volunteers who only join for the weekend will be transported back to the projects)

Day 3: MONDAY: Tsitsikamma

The bus leaves at 9am from Jeffreys Bay on its way to Tsitskamma. Tsitsikamma is a khoi word meaning "place of abundant or sparkling water". The region stretches from the Bloukrans River in the west to Eerste Rivier in the east, is bordered on the north by the imposing Tsitsikamma Mountains and in the south by the Indian Ocean. The area is covered in large tracts of indigenous forest, commercial plantation and Fynbos. Deep river gorges cleft the plateau as they make their way down to the sea, creating spectacular waterfalls and deep kloofs. Optional activities in Tsitsikamma are Zip Line Adventure and Water tubing. The spectacular Zip line adventure slides across the Kruis River. The eight slides, of which the longest is 211m, zigzag along cables across the river gorge, as high as 50m above the water in some places. Each section presents its own surprises, adventure, wonders and beautiful views over the indigenous Tsitsikamma fauna and flora. Black Water Tubing is a unique tubing, swimming, rock jumping & hiking adventure through the world renowned Tsitsikamma National Park on the Garden Route in South Africa and then for the adrenaline junkies the worlds highest bungy jump. After the activities a visit to the National Park is included. At the park are several walking trails you can follow. Overnight in Tsitsikamma

Day 4: TUESDAY, Sedgefield

You leave in the morning and head to the Crags via the spectacular Natures Valley. In the Crags you can visit Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and or the Tenikwa Wildlife Centre. Monkeyland  a sanctuary, where you will find all types of monkeys, that live in the forest. A guide will walk you through the forest, while telling you all about the monkeys and where they from. Birds of Eden is a subtropical bird park, where you can walk through yourself. Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre offers a truly unique Wildcat Experience. Guests are taken on a guided tour to meet captive-bred furry felines, living in a semi-natural environment. So close, you can hear them purr… Continuing on you visit the town of Knysna and its Waterfront but before we arrive we take a quick peek at the Elephant Sanctuary just before Knysna. This is one of our volunteer projects and volunteers who are at this project can join this tour from here. A tour at the Elephant Park is optional. Overnight is in Sedgefield.

Day 5, WEDNESDAY: Oudtshoorn

From Sedgefield you travel through the wonderful nature of Wilderness. Continuing the bus travels via the breathtaking Outeniqua Pass to the Ostrich Capital Oudtshoorn. Oudtshoorn is located in the Klein Karoo, also called a semi-dessert. The town is famous for its Ostrich Farms and Ostrich industry. You can visit one of these farms. Tours are comprehensive and are not only interesting but also great fun. We can also visit the Cango Caves, which is one of the natural wonders in the world. The tour includes a few natural chambers and takes one (standard) or one-and-a-half hour (adventure) to explore. Each chamber displays a limestone masterpiece; created by the forces of nature. Another attraction is the Wildlife Ranch, which is also one of our projects. We visit the ranch and pick up other volunteers who join from here. Overnight in Oudtshoorn

Day 6, THURSDAY: Cape Town

Today the bus travels to Cape Town along the famous R 62. Route 62 meanders through a thousand kilometers of mountains, fertile valleys and semi deserts. This will be a day travel with several stops along the way. A must stop is always at Ronnies Sex Shop for something cool. Overnight in Cape Town

   

Day 7, FRIDAY: Cape Town

We leave early in the morning to explore the Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope. The Cape Point lies at the tip of the Cape Peninsula 60 km south-west of Cape Town, a nature reserve within the Table Mountain National Park; a declared Natural World Heritage Site. At Cape of Good Hope (entrance included) we will visit the most south westerly point of South Africa. On our way we visit Houtbay and the penguins in Simonstown. In 1983 a pair of African penguins was spotted at boulders/Simonstown and in 1985 they began to lay eggs. Since then the colony has grown rapidly, increasing initially at about 60% a year. By 1997 there were 2350 adult birds. Overnight in Cape Town.

Day 8, SATERDAY: Cape Town

Cape Town has an adventurous, stylish and a colorful melting pot of cultures, and offers visitors an opportunity to discover unexpected gems.  Today you can explore all the famous attractions of Cape Town like Table Mountain, V&A Waterfront, The company Gardens, Green Market Square, Kirstenbosch Garden, Robben Island, The Castle and lots more. Overnight in Cape Town

Day 9, SUNDAY: Hermanus

The bus leaves at 9am from Cape Town towards Hermanus. You travel along the coast and in Whale Season you have the change to spot several whales while travelling. The route is called the coast of flowers. Volunteers who are at the Great White Shark Project can join the tour from here. Overnight at Hermanus

Day 10, MONDAY: Mosselbay

From Hermanus the bus travels to Mosselbay. Mosselbay is a quaint little town where you can stroll along the shops or visit the Bartolomeuw Diaz Museum. Overnight at Mosselbay

Day 11, TUESDAY: Knysna

The bus leaves at 9am towards Knysna. On the way it stops at Wilderness. An optional activity in the Wilderness National Park is a canoe trip. Eden Adventures have single, double and triple canoes for hire. These come equipped with paddles, buoyancy aids and waterproof containers for picnics, cameras etc, and a map to assist you in your decision making. There are essentially three routes you can follow. Continuing you travel to Knysna, where you can spend the afternoon in the town. Knysna is one of the Garden Route's best known travel destinations and was recently named as one of the Top 100 Destinations in the World and one of the Top 25 in Africa in the Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice Destinations Awards. Overnight at Knysna

Day 12, WEDNESDAY: Jeffreys Bay

The bus leaves in the morning for Jeffreys Bay and can make several stops upon request. The bus will stop at the highest bungee jump for some dare-devils who like to get an adrenaline rush. Overnight in Jeffreys Bay

For the people who started in Port Elizabeth, this will be the end of the tour. For the people who have joined later they can stay in Jeffreys Bay till Saturday to continue the tour with Day 1 to where they like to end or they can book an airport transfer the next day.
