THE PROJECT:
Learn to Surf and
Teach Surfing in Jeffreys Bay while helping the local community with
sport upliftment projects.
THE SURF SCHOOL:
Jeffreys
Bay Surf School, based at the Beach Lodge is the leading surf school
in Town and one of the best in the country. Our Surf instructor is
the Eastern Province Surf Team's coach and a qualified life guard,
ensuring absolute professionalism and competency - special boards
are used for complete beginners. Depending on surf conditions
lessons are run daily.
THE
COMMUNITY:
This
community is located near the beach lodge along the most
breathtaking coastline with miles and miles of unspoiled beaches.
Project that you will be involved with are, working with the
children in the pre-school and primary school, working with street
children, maintenance of schools and homes, sport development and
building projects.
ACCOMMODATION:
Beach Lodge is perched on a dune with
a 270º view of the Indian Ocean. As the name suggests this is a
place that travellers from around the world meet to share their
experiences. Aloe framed views from our wooden decks overlook surf
and sand, and are ideal for all year whale and dolphin watching. The
unique vibe of the bar and cafeteria area offer all day
refreshments, meals and fun late into the night. An advantage is
that the Beach House is located within a minute’s walk from the
community and surf.
Single Room/ Double Room:
Here you stay alone or share with a friend.
Sharing Double: In this option you book a bed in a large
en-suite room. You might share a room with someone from a completely
different culture which adds to the whole learning experience. These
rooms have there own private kitchen and barbeque area. The rooms
have sea views and a balcony/veranda with deck chairs to soak up
those golden rays.
Dormitory: This
consists of 4 bed dorms where bathrooms on-suite. There is
also a large communal kitchen. This is for the young at heart who
enjoy the adventure of backpacking.

THINGS TO DO:
This area offers a wealth of
activities like untouched hiking trails, sandboarding,
horse riding on unspoiled beaches, game drives and much more.
THE
PROGRAM:
You will be
collected at the airport in Port Elizabeth and transferred to
Jeffrey's Bay where you will be staying at the beach lodge.
Your First week
you will join
the local surf school in Jeffreys Bay to get a idea of what it entails
to teach surfing. The surf school
runs during the week, the weekends
can be used to explore, relax on the beach or explore all the surf and other
shops.
The mornings will
consist of helping with surf lessons on the main beach with
beginners and community kids.
During the
afternoons you will be working in the community on a selection of
upliftment projects and surfing with the local children.
Work days will be
weekdays from 8-4 and weekends free to relax or explore the area,
there are a selection of day excursions you can join to surrounding
Game Farms and attractions.

Jeffreys Bay Info and
Activities
Offering endless beaches and endless summers, Jeffreys Bay is
designed for the ordinary, unhurried, unworried, sun-seeking, fun
loving person.
Locals reckon that Jeffreys bay was known as the place of dreaming,
and it’s easy to see why. With miles of seemingly endless ivory
sand, littered with the largest variety of shells washed up by the
tide, and some of the best bathing beaches - it’s a special place
for any beach bum. Jeffreys bay or J-bay as it is affectionately
known, is sandwiched between the scenic garden route and sunshine
coast – so called as this region has more sunshine hours than any
other.
Our gloriously temperate climate has a mere 5 degree midday
difference between summer and winter, with a summer maximum average
temp of 27 degs and minimum average temp of 19 degs. The summers are
warm with a very temperate humidity level. Winters are mild and
pleasant, and it is significant that water sports are practised
year-round.
Our bay is the meeting point where the warm Indian Ocean current
mingles with the waters of the cold Atlantic, creating unique
conditions for an incredible diversity of marine life. Dolphins are
an almost daily sighting with the southern right whale coming to
clave between July and September putting on a show with their
courtship rituals.
J-bay is home to the
perfect wave! With its unique combination of beautiful beaches,
endless summers, abundant shells, white gold (calamari) and relaxed
lifestyle, its no wonder this town has become world renown.
Another International attraction is the Billabong Surfing Festival
in July each year when surfers from all over the world come to enjoy
these flawless formations of rolling surf.
The safe beaches are perfect for bathing and all water sports,
making it a popular weekend getaway and holiday destination.
The Jeffrey's Bay Shell Museum houses an impressive and beautiful
collection of local shells gathered on the beaches of Jeffrey's Bay,
as well as shells from other countries. Visitors are welcome to
collect shells which are varied and plentiful.
What would J'Bay be without some sort of acknowledgement to surfing
and to all the surfers that have graced its waves over time? The
Surf Museum is an epic way to discover where, when and how surfing
started, and to understand where this little seaside town fits into
the whole culture.
Between May and August each year, the low pressure systems that
moves across the cape, generate a swell that rolls around the
headland of cape St Francis and into Jeffreys Bay, creating what has
been described as the best right hand break in the world.

Horse
Riding.
Take saddle to 14 kilometres of deserted beaches with the
opportunity to spot whales and dolphins along the way. The trail
follows natural dune fields, where at times the tall dunes engulf
you. After heavy rains these dune fields are filled with sparkling
emerald pools. Go at your own pace - easy stroll or gallop with the
wind in your hair, the guide stays with the slowest!

Authentic, big 5 game viewing in the malaria free surrounds of J
bay. We are ideally located, with game viewing just 10 minutes drive
from J bay or an easy days outing to the bigger reserves like Addo
Elephant Park.
