LEARN TO
WALK ON WATER
There are many exciting
activities for visitors to partake in whilst in J’Bay,
but some of the most exhilarating must be learning how to
surf. It has never been easier
for visitors to learn to surf.
Main Beach ( Blue Flag
Beach) has the right kind
of waves for beginner surfers to learn on. There are no
rocks and there are always decent sandbanks close to the
shore, which means that beginners never have to venture deep
out into the ocean to catch waves. It is rarely so flat in J’Bay that novice surfers cannot catch small foamies (broken
waves), which is all you are after when learning how to
surf.
It is also worthwhile for
beginner surfers to link up with a surf school to learn the
basics of wave riding and ocean safety. At a surf school,
you will be given a surfboard and a wetsuit to use and a
surf instructor will take you into the water and make your
first experience seem effortless.

A
beginner surf lesson lasts for 2 hours. The lesson is
broken down as follows:
1)
Introduction
2)
Stretching exercises.
3)
Basic surf theory
(including
safety instruction).
4)
Entering and exiting the
water.
5)
Judging waves and
catching
waves lying
down on board.
6)
Learning how to stand on
a
surfboard.
After putting on your wetsuit and rash
vest (for easy identification), your surf instructor will
take you through some basic surf theory.
You will learn about your surfboard, a
leash, fins and top and bottom decks. Then your surf
instructor will work out which foot will be your front foot
before you go into the ocean.
At this stage you will go no further
than waist deep water. You will be catching white water (or
broken waves, also known as foamies). Your surf instructor
will pull you into your first few waves as you learn to
paddle your surfboard into waves yourself. You will enjoy
catching waves lying on your tummy until you are comfortable
catching waves by yourself.
Then the fun starts!! The surf
instructor will take you to the beach and teach you a
technique to assist you in standing on your surfboard.
After a few practice runs, it’s back
into the water. The rest of the lesson consists of you
standing up and learning how to keep your balance. After
your first lesson you should be able to get to your feet and
ride (even if its for a few seconds).
Thereafter you could carry on practicing by yourself or you
could take another lessons and start learning how to execute
turns and then move onto catching open faces (unbroken
waves).
The surf school also offers advanced
lessons where you will be paddled out to an intermediate
level surf break in Jeffreys Bay to catch “real waves”.
